| Junior Officials is a program that gives eleventh
graders the opportunities to learn about the political process
and the functions and responsibilities of local
government. Students organize political parties, research and
develop a platform, and conduct a campaign for election town
offices such as Mayor, Councilperson, Borough Clerk and Chief of
Police. The newly elected Junior Officials spend a day at
Borough Hall, learning about the positions to which they have
been elected from the people who actually fill those jobs.
At the March borough council meeting, the student officials take
the places of the actual officials and run the meeting, introducing
and debating their campaign platform issues. Although this
program is directed at eleventh grade students, freshmen and
sophomores are active participants - running the voter
registration drive, participating drive, participating in the
parties' campaigns, and manning the polls on Election Day.
Interested students should see Mrs. Sokoloff to sign up when the
project begins in February. |
