KDM Operating Procedures and Information

School Hours

School hours for students are from 8:45 a.m. until 3:15 p.m. School buses begin to arrive at 8:25 a.m. and the KDM staff provides supervision coverage at that time. I am concerned for student safety and am requesting that no child be brought to school before 8:25 a.m. Students arriving before 8:45 a.m. must wait in the gym until they are permitted to enter classrooms.

Absences

It is important that a child be present each day that school is in session. However, we are aware that illnesses do occur and absence from school is appropriate. If your child is absent, please call the Absentee Verification line at (973) 627-7512 before 8:30 a.m.  The student’s name, classroom teacher, reason for absence, and length of absence should be clearly stated. This number is available 24 hours each day. If you forget to call in, the office will contact you. Please send in a written excuse following each absence.

Student absences for family vacations can be disruptive to the educational process and are discouraged. When a student is absent due to a family vacation, the student and parent/guardian will assume responsibility for making arrangements to complete missed assignments and/or tests.

Tardiness

Students are tardy if they arrive at school after 8:45 a.m. and they need to report to the main office before proceeding to class. We wish to emphasize that punctuality is important and that a meeting with parents and administration will be necessary for students who are frequently late.

Dismissal

Any student, who is not going home in the usual way, must bring a note in the morning notifying the teacher of the change. If there is an emergency and you must call in to request a change, please call the main office at (973) 627-7512 ext 200 and speak to one of the office personnel. Do not leave a message on a teacher’s voice mail.

Early Dismissal

We feel that it is important for your child’s education that they arrive at school on time and remain for the entire day. We request that parents schedule medical appointments etc., after school. We recognize that parents occasionally need to bring their child in late or pick them up early due to family responsibilities; however a full day’s participation by your child is important for his/her education and we request that parents make all attempts to adhere to this policy. Students who need to be dismissed before the end of the school day are to submit a note from a parent/guardian, stating the reason, to the child’s teacher, which will be forwarded to the office. Parents are required to meet their children and sign them out at the main office.

Bus Changes

Bus changes are not permitted for play dates. If there is an emergency situation and your child needs transportation to a different stop for childcare purposes, send a note to your child’s teacher, which will be forwarded to the office. Should this change be necessary after your child leaves for school, please call the office (973) 627-7512 ext. 200 as soon as possible and speak to one of the office personnel. Do not leave this type of message in a voice mailbox. You must speak to one of the office staff.

If your child is being picked up rather than taking the bus, please send in a note or call the office before dismissal.  If your child is already at school and something pressing necessitates that you pickup your child, be sure to call the school office.

Visitors

Visitors to the school are always welcome. Upon entering the building each visitor is required to report to the main office. Articles to be delivered to children during school hours should be left in the main office.

Lost and Found

A Lost and Found Box is maintained at the entrance to the gym. It would be helpful if all articles of clothing, school bags, lunch bags or boxes, musical instruments, etc. were clearly marked with your child’s name and grade.
